Gippsland Water's Recruitment Process

The position description
The position description outlines the duties of the position, and the selection criteria. The selection criteria consists of the qualifications, licences and relevant experience requried, and the skills and knowledge considered necessary to undertake the duties effectively.

Advertisement of the job in a manner that will attract a range of suitable applications
Gippsland Water's positions are generally advertised in the local papers (Latrobe Valley Express, Warragul Gazette and Sale-Gippsland Times), our website, careers websites such as SEEK.com and MyCareer and occasionally in The Age.

Development of a shortlist of suitable applicants to interview
Prior to the shortlist, all applicants will be advised by mail or email that we have received their application. Short-listing involves assessing the applications against the selection criteria specified in the position description, and selecting the most suitable applicants to interview. Short-listed applicants will be notified at this stage. This process can sometimes take 2 - 3 weeks, so please do not be discouraged if you have not heard anything in this time.

Interviews
A panel of three Gippsland Water personnel will conduct the interview in a structured format with a series of questions relating to the selection criteria. The interview will be a behavioural interview, which means that questions will ask for examples to demonstrate the applicants ability in each specific area.

Police and Medical Checks

Applicants shortlisted for some positions will be required to undertake a pre-employment medical and/or a Police Check. The cost of these checks will be borne by Gippsland Water.

Reference checks
A minimum of two reference checks are undertaken for the preferred candidates.

Offer of employment
Once a decision has been made, the successful applicant will be offered the position verbally followed by a written offer.

Unsuccessful applicants
Interviewed applicants will be notified by phone after the successful applicant has been appointed. All unsuccessful applicants will be advised of the outcome of their application in writing.

Your application should include the following:

Cover letter

This letter should include your full name, address and contact daytime phone number and the title of the position you are applying for. It should also include reasons why you are applying for the position and overall summary of your skills and experience that meet the Selection Criteria.

Address the selection criteria
Provide a brief statement on how you meet each of the Selection Criteria e.g. qualifications, knowledge, skills, abilities and work experience. Remember to give examples of how you have had experience in these areas throughout your life.

Resume
An up to date resume including the following;

  • education / qualifications / licences;
  • employment history (with your most recent position first) detailing period of employment, position and responsibilities; and
  • a minimum of two recent work related references with daytime contact phone numbers.

Should you wish to attach any supporting material such as certificates/licence, please do not attach originals.
